CATON FAMILIES

1811: Jesse Caton of Kentucky settled near Marthasville, Warren Co. MO . m. Miss Sparks, sister of Henry Bryan's wife. Jesse was not on the 1810 Kentucky census index. He was listed on the 1800 index which was a tax lists: Clark Co. In 1810, George Caton was in Mercer Co., p. 326 and Noah in Lincoln p. 113.

            i.          Noah b. ca. 1789 in North Carolina m. St. Charles Co. 24 November 1814 Frances McDermid. They were married by his brother-in-law John B. Callaway, J.P. In 1850 Noah Caton was living in Bates Co. p. 235 61 years old, farmer $200, b. NC, Francis age 48 (should be 52) b. KY, Nelson age 18 b. MO, Emily age 16 b. MO, Hester age 11 b. MO, Thomas age 8 b. MO and Martha Summers age 12 b. MO. [Thomas J. Caton, youngest son of Noah & Francis Caton of Bates Co. d. 6 August 1854, age 13 years. MO Pioneers Vol. V p. 32] [There is probate for Noah Caton on Vernon Co., Mo. Box 3 packet 12.]

                        a. J. H. Caton went to Oregon in 1843. He received Donation Land Claim #2534 and stated that he was born in Warren County, Missouri in 1819 m. Precious Starr 31 December 1848 in Benton Co. Oregon.[1] His biography, written after his death, stated that he was b. Carroll Co. MO 10 December 1819 s/o Noah and Frances Caton. The father moved to Bates County and settled on the Maunaton stream. J.H. went west with the Applegate family. He died 15 June 1863 in Union Co. Oregon while on a trip. Jesse H. Caton b. 10 December 1819 Carroll Co. Missouri d. 15 June 1863 came to Oregon in 1843. WPA Interviews: Jesse Catonís daughter was said to be the first burial in the Alpine Cemetery in Benton Co.                         Benton Co. Oregon Will Book A:72 John W. Starr left a will dated 30 November 1859 in which he named as his executor his son-in-law Jesse H. Caton. However by 12 Oct. 1867 when he wrote a codicil Samuel E. Starr was appointed Executor because of the death of Caton.

                        Caton Family Record: single sheet in small New Testament published NW MO Gen Soc. Journal 10 (October 1990)1-4. The information was submitted by Mrs. John R. Dunlap. The early family information from 1788-1842 appears to be entered at one time: Noah Caton 16 Jan 1788; Frances Caton 3 June 1798; Christ P. Caton 16 October 1815 (m. Emily); Hugh M. Caton b. 13 October 1817. Jesse H. Caton b. 10 December 1819; Wm. S. Caton b. 23 January 1822; Elizabeth A. b. 29 February 1824; Susan W. Caton b. 26 April 1826; Fanny R. and Noah T. b. 29 April 1829; Nelson B. b. 18 June 1831; Caroline E. b. 16 Sept. 1833; Hester Ann A. b. 19 June 1840; Thomas J. b. 19 Jan. 1842.

            ii.     Jonas Caton b. 3 October 1793 in Kentucky d. 21 April 1859, age 65y, 6m, 18d. Bucklin, Linn Co. Missouri bur. Pleasant Grove Cemetery.[2] See Linn Co. History and Linn Co. Wills & Adm. m. (1) Ora ? by whom he had Luther and according to the 1830 census five others. m. in the 1840ís (2) Jane [-?-] Oaks. In April of 1855 Jonas Caton sued Jane Caton for divorce for more than two years deserted, absented and abandoned plaintiff without reasonable cause; bonds of matrimony are revoked and set aside. Defendant was permitted to marry and be restored to her name previous to her marriage and shall be known as Jane Oaks.[3]

(location not given) She d. 8 April 1858 and he m. (2) 31 Aug. 1859 Sarah F. Switzer. Luther was sued in St. Clair Co. in 1842, but could not be found. He settled in Linn Co. in 1854. According to his bio, after "he became of age" he went to Texas for four years; then to California for two; then to New Mexico.[4]

            iv.    Nancy Caton b. ca. 1793 m. St. Charles 6th day 1813 Adam Zumwalt. They were married by her brother-in-law J.P. John B. Callaway.

            v.      Jemima Caton b. ca. 1795 m. St. Charles 30 June 1814 John Carter. They were also married by J.B. Callaway.

            vi.      Jesse Jr. b. ca. 1802 m. 23 February 1841 Missouri Lamme.

On 13 February 1838 Benjamin Caton of Howard Co. sold to his son Noah of same for love and affection SE 29-49-15 and furniture livestock. (P:431] Signed with X; no dower.

Howard County Deed Book 2 p. 309 4 Oct. 1852 Serena Caton, Edward Smith and his wife Virlena, Robert J. Adams and Manda his wife of Boone County, Jesse Caton and Mary his wife, George W. Caton[5] and Benjamin L. Caton all legal heirs of Benjamin Caton, deceased, sold to Sidney D. Jackson for $32.00 a tract being the 1/10 part to each heirs being and lying in Howard Co. Robert J. and Manda, Jesse and Mary and George M. and Wm. L. acknowledged in Howard. Edward Smith and Virlena and Robert J. Adams and Manda acknowledged. in Boone (it is unknown why Adams signed twice?)

Howard County Deed Book 2:311. 15 November 1852 Noah S. Caton and Elizabeth his wife and Lucinda Caton of St. Clair for $64.00 paid by Sidney O. Jackman of Howard Co. grant all our right, title and interest in SEľ of 29-49-15 being a tract of land held by Benjamin Caton and being a 2/10 interest. Lucinda signed with X. Elizabeth did not sign.

p. 311 Strother T. Hamm and Lutitia his wife of Howard Co. for $64.00 paid to Sidney D. Jackson two undivided shares in the following tract SE of 29-49-17 owned by Benjamin Caton at the time of his death. and the interest conveyed being the share of Jackson Caton, deceased, and Samuel Ray, Jr. and Nancy his wife the said Ray sold to Jackson Caton in his lifetime their share.

                        On 22 February 1855 N.T. Caton and his wife Martha Ann of Marion Co. Oregon quitclaimed to Jno F. Weidemeyer of St. Clair Co. for $250 lots #5 & 6 in Block 31 in Osceola

                                    1868/1869 Heir of Noah S. Caton: Henry Ruby signed bond on the estate of Noah Caton, but was not listed on application as heir. May have married bet. 1868 and 1869 one of the girls. Box 112 Noah S. Caton 1868  John Caton, Adm. The application for letters of administration was completed 29 May 1868. Heirs were listed as Joshua Caton, St. Clair Co; Elizabeth Caton; St. Clair; Sarah Caton St. Clair; Martha Caton St. Clair; James Caton St. Clair; Elizabeth Caton Jr. of St. Clair and John Caton; St. Clair.

            iii.     George W. b. 1800 in Virginia; living St. Clair Co. 1850 In 1850,  Caton and his wife Sarah of St. Clair Co. sold to Thomas N. Caton of California (St Clair D p. 139) Brother of Lucinda?  In 1840 they were living in Boonville and sold a lot in New Franklin to William Humphreys. [Howard Co. S:14]

KY and Elizabeth Caton w/o of George Caton of town of Moniteau, Howard Co. deceased for $25.00 sold 17.10 acres in Howard Co.

Children: Lucinda, James R., Newton, Minrod, Nancy Susan, Benjamin, Lizzie, Semira, Thomas. Moved to Cooper Co. MO ca. 1835. On census in Cooper Co. in 1840.

Group of Catonís were living in Red River Co. Texas in 1860ís and 1870ís. Marriages for Ann, C.A., J.H., Johnson, Lucretia and Margie.

Rowan County, NC Deed Book 13:702 31 Jul 1794 Charles Caton, Sr. and wife Jemima let Joshua Caton all of Rowan have 253 acres on bank of Yadkin River on southeast side of the mouth of a little branch next to Charles Caton, Jr. Wit; Charles Caton, Jr. and Edward Cox.
